April 20, 2009Mount Pleasant Discovery Museum fundraiser
Show your support for the Mount Pleasant Discovery Museum, an educational, interactive children’s museum in development in Mount Pleasant, by attending its first fundraiser at Centennial Hall on April 30 at 7 p.m. Students and faculty from the CMU Entrepreneurial Center, Business Communications, Interior Design, Graphic Design, and Engineering programs all are collaborating with outside community members in the development of the MPDM. There will be a live and silent auction, hors d'oeuvres and dessert buffet, live local entertainment, door prizes, and cash bar. Tickets are $25 per person. April 17, 2009The Culture Crawl
The Culture Crawl is an annual tour of museums, art galleries and cultural resources within Mount Pleasant. The crawl will feature two trolley routes overlapping at the Museum of Cultural and Natural History. Trolleys will run scheduled stops so visitors can see as many sites as they wish. Visitors will enjoy free refreshments and guided tours. The event is Saturday, April 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. It is sponsored by the MCNH and planned by the students of CMU Museum Studies program. More than 30 interdisciplinary program posters will be on display in the main corridor at the Park Library from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 6 and 14. The posters highlight the variety of academic disciplines available at CMU that use a creative and innovative interdisciplinary approach to answering questions, solving problems and addressing contemporary issues from multiple perspectives. April 3, 2009Post-show discussion of Crystal Beach
The Literature Group associated with the Mount Pleasant Area Diversity Group will be hosting a post-show discussion of the play "Crystal Beach" after the 2 p.m. matinee performance April 5. The play will be performed in Bush Theatre (Moore Hall) and the discussion will be in Moore Hall Room 332. Playwright Max Bush, director Nancy Eddy and some members of the cast will be in attendance. April 1, 2009Innovation Today student showcase
You are invited to Innovation Today at CMU: a showcase of student entrepreneurship and recognition of CMU inventors, on Monday, April 6, from 10 a.m. until noon in Bovee University Center Terrace rooms C and D. Students will show the progress they have made in bringing their own ideas from concept to commercialization. March 4, 2009Writing and producing the play Crystal Beach
CMU Playwright-in-Residence Max Bush and Theater Arts faculty member Nancy Eddy will trace the creative development and writing of Crystal Beach, an original play for young adults written here on campus this year as part of CMU's Youth Theatre Program. After the presentation, all are invited to stay for a rehersal of the play. This program is part of the English Department's Great Lakes Faculty Forum series.
Crystal Beach, directed by Nancy Eddy, has its world premiere on April 1 as part of CMU's University Theatre Productions. The play runs in Bush Theatre through April 5.

February 12, 2009Museum opening new exhibit
The Museum of Cultural and Natural History will celebrate its new exhibit, "Evolution and Emancipation: Darwin and Lincoln at 200," this Friday, Feb. 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. This exhibit explores how each man's image has been used over the past 150 years to inspire people, promote causes and even sell goods. The event will feature live impersonators from different time periods (including Darwin himself) and free food. This event is open to all. Located in Rowe Hall, on the corner of Bellows Street and East Campus Drive. The exhibit will be displayed Feb. 13 - June 30, Monday-Friday (8 am - 5 pm), and Saturday and Sunday (1 pm - 5 pm). Faculty are invited to apply for the women's studies director position. It's a half-time position for a three-year term beginning August 2009. The director administers the Women’s Studies Program, including advising, scheduling, grant writing, curriculum development, committee work; may teach senior seminar (WST 496). Position reports to the dean of the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences. Qualifications include: effective communications and organizational skills, as well as teaching, research or other professional activities related to women’s studies work. Approximately 1,000 prospective students and their families will visit campus and have the opportunity to meet with faculty and staff, tour our grounds, learn about various academic disciplines and student service areas, and compete for some of CMU's most prestigious scholarships. November 19, 2008"Kiss Me, Kate"
A University Theatre and School of Music production of "Kiss Me, Kate" is 7:30 p.m. today in Bush Theatre and 2 p.m. Sunday, November 23. Director is Annette Thornton. "Kiss Me, Kate" opened in 1948 and received five Tony Awards in 1949 - the first awarded to a musical. The story recounts the antics of two feuding couples whose onstage performances reflect their offstage tensions in a traveling Broadway-bound production of "The Taming of the Shrew." This delightful musical features 18 classic Cole Porter songs, including "I Hate Men" and "Brush Up Your Shakespeare." The Museum of Cultural and Natural History is seeking memorabilia or collectibles that include photographs, drawings or other images of either Charles Darwin or Abraham Lincoln for an exhibition commemorating their 200th birthday, Feb. 12, 2009. Cast plaques or statuettes, bookends, coins or medals, tree ornaments or images on T-shirts, ceramic plates, wristwatches, costumes, dolls or advertisements are desired; no books or photos please. October 30, 2008Doll-making session
The Museum of Cultural and Natural History is hosting "Make and Take Your Own Personal Doll: The Craft of Doll Making" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Veterans Memorial Library, downtown Mount Pleasant. The session is appropriate for aes 6 to 12. Participants will cut, sew and stuff a 12-inch cloth doll to take home. A veteran teacher and expert craftswoman, Sally Coohon, will lead the step-by-step session. Free; pre-registration required; limited to 15 participants. Central Michigan University's College of Business Administration will host "The Excellence and the Entrepreneur of Tomorrow," a presentation by Florine Mark, president and CEO of The Weight Watchers Group, at 10 a.m. Nov. 5 in the Bovee University Center Auditorium. October 14, 2008CMU accepting applications for Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship
High school students with a knack for journalism have the opportunity to use their skills to help fund their college education thanks to a Central Michigan University scholarship totaling nearly $80,000. Applications are being accepted for CMU's 2009 Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship, which provides four years of full tuition, as well as supplementary awards to cover room and board expenses.

September 3, 2008Grant awarded to CMU museum creates local collaboration
Local elementary school students will have the opportunity to sleuth out clues as cultural detectives, while brushing up on their geography and other social studies skills, thanks to a grant from the Kellogg Youth Fund. The grant, awarded to the Central Michigan University Museum of Cultural and Natural History, will create a partnership between the museum, local elementary schools and Veteran's Memorial Library in Mount Pleasant.

May 15, 2008CMU leadership minor signs 300th student
Central Michigan University continues to "lead" the way with one of its newest programs. Sara Shoemaker of Blissfield, who recently completed her freshman year at CMU, has become the 300th student to sign CMU's leadership minor. The 24-credit, interdisciplinary program, the first of its kind at a public university in Michigan, has been offered to students since fall 2006.

Beyond Barbie: Dolls, Dress and Culture in Global Perspective features more than 100 dolls from more than 50 countries. It will give visitors a firsthand look into these countries' cultures and traditions through their elaborate clothing. This exhibit is located in the Museum of Cultural and Natural History, inside Rowe Hall.

March 27, 2008CMU culture crawl
The 2008 Culture Crawl on April 13 will enable visitors to take a walking or trolley tour of many of mid-Michigan’s cultural hot spots, and will offer enhanced opportunities with two new stops on CMU’s campus and two outside of campus. The event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m., and is free and open to the public.
The Culture Crawl was created by students in CMU’s museum education and interpretation class, which is part of the museum studies interdisciplinary minor, and sponsored by CMU’s Museum of Cultural and Natural History. Students from the class will serve as tour guides, leading visitors to the various stops every half hour, and also as interpreters stationed at each site.

January 18, 2008New program! Ph.D. in the Science of Advanced Materials
The Ph.D. program in the Science of Advanced Materials builds on successful research programs of faculty from several departments in the College of Science and Technology (CST) to provide students with a strong, interdisciplinary foundation in the science of advanced materials, with training in current techniques for the predictive modeling of new materials, their synthesis, and their characterization. It addresses a growing need in Michigan and across the U.S. for workers with training in advanced materials research.
